how to setup google email service for your domain

9 May 2010 35 views No Comment

For all my domain emails I use the free gmail service. I am not total fan of gmail service but like to use it because a)Its free b)It has nice spam filtering c)its better than webmail services provided by the most hosting companies. Only reason I hate gmail service is that I am not able to access my emails in traditional way. The emails are grouped together according to subject. Google doesn’t allow any option to sort emails by the arrival time because google wants to push down advertisements over our throats using the subject of the email thread.

Enough google bashing! Recently I moved my domains from dreamhost to bluehost hosting services. Dreamhost allowed automatic configuration of the google apps, at the time website is installed or later. Bluehost lack this automatic google app integration in their cpanel. After losing my emails for several hours I figured out how to setup the gmail service on bluehost. These step also apply to other hosting services.

1. If you already have google apps working with old hosting and you are moving to new hosting

a) change the CNAME records to ghs.google.com

This can be done from the domain manger of the host. On blue host goto cpanel->domains->Advanced DNS Zone Editor.
Example
mail.infopint.com. 14400 IN CNAME ghs.google.com

b) Add the MX records as following

mail MX 10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 20 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 20 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.

On bluehost goto cpanel-mail->MX Entry

MX 10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 20 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 20 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.
mail MX 30 ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM.

Priority Destination Actions
10 aspmx.l.google.com Edit Delete
20 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com Edit Delete
